11 Leong Wai Man President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government Congratulations on the Publication of “A Century of Iec Long Firecracker Factory in Radiance – An Exhibition on the Resonant History and Aesthetic Memory of Macao Firecrackers An Illustrated Chronicle of Macao's Centennial Firecracker Label Art” 11 澳門特別行政區政府文化局局長 梁惠敏 敬賀 二零二六年二月

as carrier of both commerce and folk art. Its hybrid imagery and typography – where Eastern and Western influences converge – quietly reflect Macao's long-standing role in international exchange, and serve as a prelude to the city's later transformation into today's diverse, bustling global city. Once among Macao's four major industries, the firecracker trade now enters this exhibition space after a century, enabling us to encounter its brilliant “resonant history”. Whether through the sparks of the firecracker industry or the language of today's art, a shared spirit of dedication and craftsmanship has persisted, shaping Macao's development. This exhibition has been made possible through the support of the Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Macao Government Tourism Office; the scholarly commitment of Professor Ung Vai Meng to the preservation and interpretation of Macao's firecracker heritage as well as the beauty of “Made in Macao”; the archival contributions of the Macau University of Science and Technology Library and loaned collections from the Macao Museum and the Archives of Macao; and the generous sharing of materials and expertise by Mr. Albert Lai, whose lifelong dedication has safeguarded Macao's firecracker culture. We extend our special thanks to Professor Ung for his coordination, which brought Sands China and the Macau University of Science and Technology together to compile this profound and heartwarming chronicle of Macao's century-old firecracker industry. Grounded in rigorous archival research, it complements the exhibition – one experienced in space and the other in print – both serving as important media for the preservation of Macao's firecracker tradition. Through the collective efforts of all parties involved, the radiance of the city's industrial past has been rekindled. The sound and light of a firecracker may be fleeting, yet its resonance within Macao's history is enduring. It is our hope that visitors will carry the reflections of this exhibition beyond the gallery, and that people from all walks of life will continue to form a greater synergy, illuminating Macao further onto the world stage. Dr. Wilfred Wong Executive Vice Chairman Sands China Ltd. 15 When craftsmanship reaches its pinnacle, it becomes art; and when art is tested by time, it settles into history. In tracing the century-long story of the Iec Long Firecracker Factory in Macao, we encounter a profound resonance among these three realms. In the early twentieth century, the firecracker industry constituted a vital fabric of Taipa's economy. Within neighbourhood streets and alleys, generations of residents toiled in the meticulous processes of tube rolling, crimping and braiding firecrackers – a work practiced to make a living, yet from these repetitive gestures emerged a body of folk knowledge and craftsmanship. Founded in 1925, Iec Long became the longest-running firecracker factory of its era in Macao. Beyond its industrial function, it embodied the rhythms of community life and carried the mark of “Made in Macao” to the wider world through global trade routes. Hence, when the Macao SAR government entrusted us with the revitalisation of the Iec Long Firecracker Factory, we regarded it not merely as a conservation effort, but as a project of generational heritage – where a historic industrial site is repurposed, sustained, and reconnected with today's life through cultural engagement. To commemorate the centenary of Iec Long's establishment, we are honoured to join hands with Professor Ung Vai Meng, a distinguished figure in Macao's art scene, and his research team to jointly curate “A Century of Iec Long Firecracker Factory in Radiance – An Exhibition on the Resonant History and Aesthetic Memory of Macao Firecrackers” at Sands Gallery. Drawing upon treasured archival material, firecracker packaging labels, museum collections, reconstruction of manufacturing processes and mixed media artistic expressions, the exhibition revives the memory of an industrial heritage that has gradually receded from everyday life, inviting the public to experience it anew. It pays tributes to Macao's history and also stands as a reflection of Sands China's dedication to giving back to the local community and wider city through the transformative power of culture. By situating history, industry and art within a shared framework, the exhibition invites audiences to contemplate on their intertwined relationships across time. The story of Iec Long reveals that industry extends beyond production alone; it also preserves ingenuity and artistry. From intricate handcraft to vivid packaging papers, firecrackers functioned 14

of Macao's firecracker craftsmanship extends beyond the gallery into the realms of art, education and community engagement, shaping a far-reaching cultural tourism network. In doing so, the exhibition echoes the expansive energy of firecrackers – where a single spark radiates outward – while reaffirming Sands China's dedication to Macao's diversified development. Through artistic presentation and narratives drawn from everyday life, the exhibition invites visitors into an immersive and interactive environment of light and colours, where they can explore the handcrafted processes and original labels of “Made in Macao” and gain a deeper appreciation of aesthetics behind firecrackers. The exhibition is designed to encourage audiences to step beyond the gallery and into the community, experiencing firsthand the artisanal spirit embodied by the Iec Long Firecracker Factory. Sands China stays firmly committed to Macao's diversified development. As such, we endeavour to expand the reach of cultural tourism, enabling global audiences to experience Macao from fresh perspectives and to appreciate the depth and breadth of this city. I cordially invite you to visit the exhibition and experience the craftsmanship of Iec Long firecrackers, and to explore the continuing vitality of Macao's cultural landscape. Grant Chum Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director Sands China Ltd. 19 Macao is a city where culture and tourism are closely intertwined. Shaped by over four centuries of exchanges between the East and West, this enduring interaction has defined the city's distinctive character and continues to inform its future development. Marking the 100th anniversary of the Iec Long Firecracker Factory, Sands China presents “A Century of Iec Long Firecracker Factory in Radiance – An Exhibition on the Resonant History and Aesthetic Memory of Macao Firecrackers”, alongside the publication of “An Illustrated Chronicle of Macao's Centennial Firecracker Label Art”, jointly compiled with Professor Ung Vai Meng and the Macau University of Science and Technology Library. Together, these initiatives revisit the profound industrial and cultural history of Macao's firecrackers – which was once deeply rooted in local craftsmanship, community life and collective memory – and reinterpret it as a shared cultural legacy that continues to contribute to the city's cultural tourism development. The glamour of firecrackers lies in its transformation. A single spark becomes a cascade of light, sound and colour, engaging the senses and sparking emotional resonance. Both exhibition and publication take their titles from this very dazzling spectacle, encapsulating its transformative “radiance” and “splendour”. Staged at Sands Gallery, the exhibition draws upon the historical legacy of Iec Long, retelling the industrial aesthetics of Macao's firecracker industry through a contemporary artistic lens. Within a space defined by thoughtful curation and cultural resonance, the narrative of a once-thriving industry is revitalised as a dynamic cultural tourism experience. Through Sands China's endeavours, the cultural value 18

These archives hold profound significance for society. Their life starts from the act of collection and become even more valuable for their systematic approach: from collection inventorying, classifying and cataloging, image restoring, data verifying, in-depth research, to the final publication. To this end, Sands China and the MUST Library worked together, and on the centennial commemoration of the Iec Long Firecracker Factory, accompanying the exhibition, compiled this Illustrated Chronicle. The book not only reviews the brief histories and brand stories of representative firecracker manufacturers in Macao over the past century – such as Iec Long, Kwan Yick, Wang Yick, Po Sing – but also presents their packaging as finely as possible in their original size. At the same time, a dedicated chapter elucidates the pivotal role of foreign trading firms in the history of local firecracker exports, presents a historical panorama that integrates brand strategies, aesthetics of the time and social functions. The golden days are gone, but the memories remain. We sincerely hope that readers, through this chronicle showcasing over 300 firecracker packaging labels, can be drawn closer to the journey of the firecracker industry, from its beginning to development, from prosperity to transformation, and experience the aesthetics of its designs, the flourishing of its trade and the changes of the era. These paper labels displayed before you today should not merely be silent footnotes in history. Ultimately, we hope they serve as a key to imagery and creativity, opening an artistic window for Macao – one that connects deeply with the motherland while engaging in dialogue with the world. Ung Vai Meng|Curator On the eve of the Year of the Horse February 2025 23 The firecracker industry of Macao once illuminated its economic landscape and cultural memory for over a century. As time flew, the bustle of bygone days has gradually fallen silent, yet the archives, correspondence and advertising packaging labels that remain are like faded old photographs, telling the story of the past glory. For someone born and raised in Macao like me, these uniquely designed and vibrant firecracker labels, along with the yellowing receipts and invoices, have always held a special charm, which is why they have been a cherished collection for over thirty years. As part of the Macao Art Archive, this entire collection was donated to the Macau University of Science and Technology Library three years ago, in the hope that it would not only be properly preserved, but also serve as a tangible, researchable and transmissible testament to history. Last spring, by sheer serendipity, colleagues from Sands China, who are dedicated to revitalizing the former Iec Long Firecracker Factory site, visited the MUST Library where they had the opportunity to view firsthand this precious collection of firecracker labels and archives related to Macao's firecracker industry, and a shared commitment was found to preserve and pass on the city's cultural heritage. Thus, a project team formed by Sands China and staff from MUST Library came together, with the aim of promoting the revitalization of the Iec Long Firecracker Factory and research on Macao's historical firecracker industry. The team kicked off at once preparations for the “A Century of Iec Long Firecracker Factory in Radiance – An Exhibition on the Resonant History and Aesthetic Memory of Macao Firecrackers”. 22

27 26 Yick Loong Fireworks Co. Centennial Legacy·Radiant Brilliance 27 Chapter 1 Yick Loong Fireworks Co. Centennial Legacy·Radiant Brilliance Located in the urban area of Taipa, the Yick Loong Fireworks Co. (aka Iec Long Firecracker Factory), founded in 1925 by merchant Tang Bick Tong, was one of Macao's oldest and largest traditional firecracker manufacturers. Building upon his firecracker business established much earlier during the late Qing dynasty in Foshan in Guangdong province, Mr. Tang created the Yick Loong Fireworks Co. in Macao, which not only witnessed the entire trajectory of the local firecracker industry – from prosperity to decline – but also embodied the broader economic and social development of the city. Yick Loong had an extensive set of brands, with its products sold far and wide both domestically and internationally. It owned several famous trademarks, such as the Duck Brand, Silver Bird Brand, Flying Wheel Brand, Children Brand, Swallow Brand, and Elephant Brand. Its packaging designs masterfully blended traditional auspicious motifs with modern visual styles, showcasing festive atmospheres while maintaining artistic beauty. Its trademarks featured diverse imagery encompassing natural elements, children at play, and dynamic elements, conveying messages of peace, vitality, and joy through vibrant colors and lively patterns. This made Yick Loong stand out as a representative in firecracker packaging art in Southern China. With changing times, Yick Loong ceased production in the mid-1980s. In 2022, the revitalized “Former Iec Long Firecracker Factory Walkway” officially opened to the public. The former factory buildings, ponds, and green-working* workshops have been transformed into a landmark that fuses together history, culture, and creative tourism, continuing the memory of Macao's industrial heritage and the story of the old Taipa Village.

The Duck Brand was one of Yick Loong's legacy trademarks, used consistently for over sixty years since its founding, bearing witness to the company's development through various periods. The central motif typically features a pair of ducks swimming serenely in a lotus pond, surrounded by pink lotus flowers and rice stalks. The soft color palette and harmonious scene symbolize marital bliss, reunion, and auspicious harmony. As the flagship brand of Yick Loong, the double ducks design appeared across different periods, sometimes alone and at other times in combination with beauties from different times. Some Duck Brand labels also bore a portrait of the founder, Tang Bick Tong, serving as a guarantee of quality. Additionally, individual firecrackers were often encased in wrappers printed with the double ducks motif, enjoying great popularity in the market.
